When Do Schools Break Up for Christmas 2026? UK Dates

Key Takeaways

  • Most schools in England and Wales finish on Friday 18 December 2026 and go back on Monday 4 January 2027.
  • 18 and 21 December are both right: the 18th is the last day of term, the 21st is the first day of the holiday.
  • Scottish schools usually return on 5 or 6 January, because Monday 4 January is a bank holiday there. Northern Ireland is closed from 21 December to 1 January.
  • Check your own school's calendar: academies can differ, and a training day can sit at either end of the break.

One person in the family says schools break up on the 21st. Someone else says the 18th. Both are right, which doesn't help when you're booking leave.

Most schools in England and Wales finish for Christmas on Friday 18 December 2026 and go back on Monday 4 January 2027. Scotland and Northern Ireland have their own dates, set out below.

When do schools break up for Christmas 2026?

Most English schools break up on Friday 18 December. North Tyneside, Milton Keynes and Edinburgh all end the autumn term that day, and Welsh Government term dates give the same date for maintained schools in Wales. The one Welsh exception is Powys, which finishes on Tuesday 22 December.

The 18-or-21 confusion comes from two kinds of source. Council pages list the term, which ends on the 18th. Calendar sites list the holiday, which runs from Monday 21 December to Friday 1 January. The 1 January end date is the last weekday before the weekend, not the day pupils go back.

When do schools go back after Christmas 2026?

Schools in England and Wales go back on Monday 4 January 2027. Northern Ireland's closure runs to Friday 1 January, so pupils return on the same Monday.

Scotland returns later; the reason is in the Scottish section below.

What are the Christmas 2026 school dates for each nation?

Nation Last day of term Back at school
England Fri 18 Dec (most councils) Mon 4 Jan
Wales Fri 18 Dec (Powys: Tue 22 Dec) Mon 4 Jan
Scotland Fri 18 Dec in most councils checked; Tue 22 Dec in South Lanarkshire Tue 5 or Wed 6 Jan, depending on council
Northern Ireland Fri 18 Dec (closure runs Mon 21 Dec to Fri 1 Jan) Mon 4 Jan

These are the dates most councils use, not a guarantee for your school. Northern Ireland schools can also take their own staff training days, so pupil days can differ from school to school.

Do Scottish councils have the same Christmas dates?

No. Scotland sets term dates council by council, and the return date depends on a bank holiday. Monday 4 January 2027 is the substitute for 2 January, which falls on a Saturday, so Scottish schools can't reopen that day. These are the councils whose own pages were checked:

  • Edinburgh: term ends Friday 18 December, back Wednesday 6 January.
  • North Lanarkshire: schools close at 2.30pm on Friday 18 December, back Tuesday 5 January.
  • West Lothian: break starts Friday 18 December, back Tuesday 5 January.
  • South Lanarkshire: schools close at 2.30pm on Tuesday 22 December, back Wednesday 6 January.

Glasgow, Fife, Highland and the rest set their own, so ask your school rather than assuming a neighbouring council's dates apply. Note the 2.30pm finish on the last day: it changes the school run, and none of the national date pages we compared mention it.

Why might your school's dates be different?

Because councils set dates for the schools they run, and not every school is one of those. Milton Keynes, for example, says term dates may vary for voluntary aided, foundation and academy schools. Private schools set their own.

Training days are the other variable. Milton Keynes notes that its schools are open to pupils for 195 days against 190 required term days, so five training days sit inside the term dates and each school publishes its own. Before you book travel around the 4th, check that the school expects pupils back that day.

How do you cover the Christmas break?

Count the working days first. Between an 18 December finish and a 4 January return in England there are seven: 21 to 24 December and 29 to 31 December. Christmas Day, the Boxing Day substitute on Monday 28 December and New Year's Day all fall on weekdays, so they don't need cover. In Edinburgh the count is eight, because pupils don't return until Wednesday 6 January and Tuesday 5 January is a working day.

Then ask each person covering those days for their own dates. A childminder or nursery may close earlier than the school does, and a grandparent offering to "have them for the week" may mean a different week. Where both parents work and no one has seven days of leave, those are the days to sort out first; the same arithmetic over six weeks is in our piece on the summer holiday childcare gap.

Coram's 2026 holiday childcare survey puts the average cost at £191 per child per week across Great Britain, up 5% on last year. That figure covers school holidays generally; we couldn't find a Christmas-only price, so ask your own provider for theirs.

Frequently asked questions

When do schools break up for Christmas 2026 in England?

Most English councils end the autumn term on Friday 18 December 2026. Academies, voluntary aided and foundation schools can set their own dates, so check your school's calendar.

When do schools go back after Christmas 2026 in England?

Most English schools go back on Monday 4 January 2027. Some schools place a training day at the start of term, so confirm that pupils, not just staff, are expected on the 4th.

When do Scottish schools break up for Christmas 2026 and go back?

Scotland has no single national date. Several councils break up on Friday 18 December and return on Tuesday 5 or Wednesday 6 January 2027, because Monday 4 January is a bank holiday. South Lanarkshire breaks up later, on Tuesday 22 December.

When is the Christmas holiday in Northern Ireland in 2026?

The Department of Education's non-operational days for 2026/27 are Monday 21 December 2026 to Friday 1 January 2027. Pupils go back after the weekend, on Monday 4 January, unless their school has set a training day.

When do Welsh schools break up for Christmas 2026?

Welsh Government term dates have maintained schools breaking up on Friday 18 December 2026 and returning on Monday 4 January 2027. Powys is the exception, finishing on Tuesday 22 December.

Why do some websites say 18 December and others 21 December?

They are describing different things. Friday 18 December is the last day of term; Monday 21 December is the first day of the holiday. Calendar sites tend to list the holiday, council pages list the term.

Do academies and private schools have the same Christmas dates as the council?

Not necessarily. Academies, voluntary aided and foundation schools can set their own term dates, and private schools set theirs independently, so the council's calendar is only a guide for them.

How many working days are there between schools breaking up and going back?

In England there are seven, if your school breaks up on 18 December and returns on 4 January: 21 to 24 December and 29 to 31 December. Christmas Day, the Boxing Day bank holiday on Monday 28 December and New Year's Day fall on weekdays but are bank holidays.
